Mortlock Family TreeMORTLOCK ORIGINS "Unless the authenticity of certain documents in my possession be disputed, I descend lineally from Noah; though time or carelessness have so injured the parchment, that it is impossible to discern whether my more immediate progenitor was Shem, Ham or Japhet. It would be easy to go further back, but his posterity have no reason to be proud of Adam, and little to thank him for. His chief merit seems to have been possession of the largest landed property ever owned by man. In heraldry he would not be reckoned a gentleman, and he was most probably hen-pecked." an extract from - "Experiences of a Convict" by - John Frederick Mortlock (1809-1882) If you have information about your branch of the family tree please send it to me. Whether it links to the rest or not, I may well post it. I am not a genealogist and have made no attempt to consolidate any of the information I have been sent. I will leave that to others. This page is intended as a resource that people who are genealogists can use. I will try to post everything relevant I receive here. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of any of the information sent to me. There are 2 versions of one branch immediately below ( to which I am related ), which clearly overlap a lot. I've not tried to rationalise or combine them. Thanks also to the many contributors whose trees, messages and snippets of information are listed on this page. Hi Tony, Added 29th July 2010
I refer to the e-mail posted by Jo Weir on 5th September 2008. Added 22nd September 2010
Dear Tony and Robert Added 29th November 2010 Tony, My Granddad Stanley Herbert Mortlock is 1 of 7 children to his father Edmond Mortlock. Edmond Mortlock was believed to be born in the Essex area around the early 1890’s or late 1880’s to parents unknown (which is why im sending you this email). He was orphaned at a very young age (he might have lived with his aunt) I believe due to a fire taking his mother and his father taking his own life due to the tragedy. Not much of a family tree because of the above and I’m sure it will remain a total mystery past my great grandfather. Any clues would be great if you have any??? James Cross Robert Griffiths responded "Download the China Mortlock tree from the Mortlock Encyclopedia and go to page Hertford(2), and follow this lead backwards for ancestry and forwards from Edmond to Stanley. Rgds RG". Added 6th December 2010 Hello Tony, Excellent pages, many thanks. I have returned again to your website in the hope of a link to any descendants of JOHN DANIEL RANSON born 1828 in London. He qualified as a Doctor of Medicine in 1851 and soon after emigrated to Victoria in Australia. I have his death as 1879 in Footscray Victoria. He was the son of JOHN DANIEL RANSON born 1802 in London and SARAH MILLER born 1809 Wiltshire and the grandson of WILLIAM RANSON born 1773 in Suffolk and ANN MORTLOCK born 1782, who was the daughter of SIMON MORTLOCK and his wife ANN. This WILLIAM RANSON was the uncle of WILLIAM RANSON MORTLOCK of Australia. I am descended from the Suffolk Ransons, and have been unable to trace the BMDs in Australia of the children and descendants of JOHN DANIEL RANSON mentioned above who was Surgeon in Launceston from 1856 - 1870 and then from 1871 in Phillip Island. Any help would be greatly appreciated with best wishes Natalie Dickson

Received 14th April 2011 Tony, I am trying to trace Thomas, known as Tommy, Modlock married
to Florence, he was born about 100 years ago, lived in Lambeth, when married in
The Elephant and castle area of London, he served in the Parachute Regiment in
WW2. Go to http://www.mortlock.info/mortlock-encyclopedia.html and download the London section of trees. There is a group of Modlocks in Southwark and Lambeth shown there which includes two Thomas Donald Modlocks born 1901 & 1913. Is one of these what you are looking for? Also download the Essex trees and look in Peldon, there are a couple of Modlocks there. However I have an open mind over whether the Modlocks are part of Mortlock, or something separate. Rgds Robert Griffiths. Received 21st April 2011 Hi Received 6th May 2011 Hello,First I want to apologize because my English is very poor, so be kind to forget my errors and my horrible grammar! I have recently discovered your very interesting website about the Mortlock
family (thanks to Google and obviously to the Web!):
http://www.mortlock.info/index.html (and so on)
My grandfather on my mother's side was Henri Masse, second son of Alice Mortlock and Alfred Masse. I found Diane John's family tree (in http://www.mortlock.info/thpremot/mortarc1.html ) very useful and I used it for completing my mother's side of the tree. NB: I decided to contact her, but her mail address does not exist anymore...
1/ Charles William (1845-?) 2/ Julia Marian Mary (1847-?) 3/ Alice Mary Mortlock (1848-?) married Alfred Masse (?-1881), they lived in Paris
My parents gave me some details: Alice, who lived in Paris, was a very appreciated governess in an upper class family. My great-grandfather Alfred Masse was bitten by a dog and died in 1881 due to the rabies. Shortly after, Alice died and it was also a sad story: she was crossing a street in Paris, and she was hit by a bus or other vehicule, I don't know exactly. She was injured on the head and immediatly forgot her French language, so she could'nt give her name or address, and was completely misunderstood. Finally, she died at hospital (sorry, no date). After the death of Alfred and Alice, her sister Julia decided to come to France and take care of Alice's sons. Unfortunatly, I have no further details: my grandfather and grandmother died when I was young, they lived in Paris, I was living in Grenoble. In my youth, my family said that our family-tree had a famous ancestor in Cambridge, and my aunt had a very old photograph of Charles William Mortlock, wearing this special hat (the "mortar-board"?) and a gown, but I never saw it, so my informations concerning this genealogy were very incomplete. Again, I want to thank you for the creation and maintenance of this website, I am very proud to belong to this honorable family... Best regards,

Hi Tony My grandmother was Ada Mortlock born in 1893 in London. She had brothers Sydney and Percy and sisters Hilda and Gertrude. We have a photo of Percy in uniform and several of Ada. Her mother was Augusta. We think the father was William Tempestuous Mortlock, a cheesemongers assistant. Ada was the youngest and was in an orphanage for a time as a child, when her father died(?) in the early 1900s. Some of your records show that he left Augusta and went to live with someone else (Catherine?). Ada emigrated to New Zealand but we don’t know when, then came to Australia, not sure when. My grandfather (her husband) was Horace Eusibius Matthews, also born in London, emigrated to Australia via NZ. Ada and Horace had one child, my father Clive Derek Matthews in July 1926. They lived in Belair in Adelaide, South Australia. Horace died in SA in 1947. Ada died in Launceston Tasmania in 1974. Clive died in 1973 in Launceston – some few months before his mother. Clive married Amy Johnson and had three children, Kathryn, Robert and Paul. All still living, and all with children and some with grand-children. It would be helpful if you have any more information on this particular Mortlock family. I would like to know what happened to Sidney, Hilda and Gertrude and their children – if any – I don’t think Gertrude ever married – but am not sure. Hi Tony,
My name is Michelle Alison Mortlock. My father is called Richard James Mortlock, I have an uncle Gary James Mortlock and an aunty Alison Mortlock. My grandfathers name is Reginold James Mortlock, My gradmothers name is Joan Mortlock. I have two cousins Holly & Lauren Mortlock. I have twin brother & sister Kai James Mortlock and Rosie Mortlock. We all come from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. All the above are still alive. I am unsure of any other Mortlock family. I have found your website very interesting as I was unaware of all the Mortlock information out there. Many thanks Michelle Received 22nd June 2011 Hi I have been searching through the Mortlock information on the web looking for Mabel Mortlock born 1866 to James John Mortlock a descendant of 'William the Surveyor.' The 'China Mortlocks" show Mabel had 2 children. The NSW Birth records also show Mabel as the mother of Kenneth, b. 1898 and Norman W, b 1900. Both children were born in Kogarah, NSW and no father was named. I think that my grandfather, Kenneth Mortlock Wein was Mabel's son who she adopted out at birth. I can find no trace of Mabel or her other son, Norman other than the birth record. If anyone following the Mortlock line has information, please contact phillips4@slingshot.co.nz Received 25th November 2011 "Here is a description of the Western Australian family branch of James and Caroline Mortlock, through the story of patriarch Harold John Mortlock, who left England in the late nineteenth Century." My email address has changed to dianejohn@ntlworld.com so hopefully you can change it on the website. Always find the site interesting when I visit. My Family tree details descend from Samuel Mortlock born 1726 in Essex. Hope you & family are keeping well. Cheers Diane John Cardiff U.K. Received 30th July 2012
Hi Tony, Received 30th August 2012 Tony. Have just been going through your terrific site, and Robert's detailed "Banking Mortlocks". What a lot of work - thank you both for all of this. My brother-in-law, Ian Leathes DONALDSON, is descended from Dr. J.W. DONALDSON, through his grandson, Major John William DONALDSON. The Major, for the record, died in Bannu, India (not in Burma) in 1905 - he was shot by a Mahsoud fanatic. Also, his brother Charles' middle name (according to the registration of his baptism) was "Egerton," not "Edgerstone". For information, I've attached a copy of the descendancy report for the family beyond Dr. J.W. DONALDSON, so far as I have it. I would be most interested in hearing from others who are interested in this line. Mary Anne Sharpe Ottawa, Canada Added 19th June 2013 Hi Tony, Thank you for your very interesting site. My great grandfather was John Mortlock, born in Suffolk in 1844. I am told he left Southampton on the immigrant ship Rajasthan which arrived in Algoa Bay in South Africa in 1861. He married Anna Bezuidenhout and they had a (unknown to me) number of children, one of whom was my grandfather Conrad Peter Mortlock B1895 – D1975. His son Charles James Mortlock was my father B1930 D2000. John Mortlock died in Tabankulu, Transkei in 1915. Apparently John had a brother by the name of Samuel. I would love to know who his parents and other siblings were if anyone can help please? Kind regards, Beth Stewart (nee Mortlock)
