G'day there Tony,

Your site is turning into a Mortlock lost and found and I have a Mortlock that I was hoping might fit into somebody's family tree - being totally optimistic.    My family and I have gathered quite a bit on this bloke but have not been able to establish birth details or make a connection to his father a William Mortlock.   I would appreciate any contributions or advice.

Regards   Chris Mortlock   Australia

Name:   Thomas Mortlock   Birth date:  Based on documentation already gathered his birth date has to be somewhere between late 1814 and early 1815, presumably somewhere in the district of Cambridge. This is based on the fact that he was convicted for stealing with several others in Ridgewell Essex in November 1832 at the Essex Assises aged 17 years . He was later transported to Australia in March 1833. He arrived in Australia in June 1833 aged 18 years aboard the vessel Captain Cook. He subsequently served out his time and was given his ticket of leave.   Death Notice:    Father noted as William.

My name is Zoe Mortlock and I have quite a large family. I am not too sure of the history of my family but would love to find out, hence my observing your web site. My grandfather who died many years ago was called Frederick Mortlock and he married Ethel Valentine (who died two years ago at the grand old age of 89). Between them they had Ethel Mortlock (who everyone calls Pearly), Fred Mortlock, Roy Mortlock, David Mortlock, Anne Mortlock and Christine Mortlock (who sadly died of cancer about 14 years ago - although we were happy that she had grandad to look after her as she was the youngest.) Ethel Mortlock (Pearly) married and had Jane and Angie (changed surname). Jane is married with two children - Carly and Dean and Angie is married with two children Christopher and Charlotte. Fred Mortlock married Beryl and they had David and Terry Mortlock. Since then Terry has had Louise and Jason Mortlock. Roy Mortlock married Susan and between them they had Alison,  Clare and Andrew. Alison and Clare have both got two children each with different surnames and Andrew now has four boys (two twins) called Lewis, George, Jack and Joseph Mortlock. David Mortlock who is my father, married Jan and they had Myself (Zoe) and my sister Laura Mortlock. Anne Mortlock went to Australia and married Gary, they came back to England where they had Joanne and Gemma. Joanne now has two children. They have now all gone back to set up a horse farm near Melbourne, Australia. Finally my dads youngest sister Christine Mortlock married and had Daniel and Rebecca. Unfortunately she is no longer with us.

And that is my large family, not everyone's surname is Mortlock because of marriage but all are connected and I am sure there are more of us in the way of boyfriends and fiancées etc.

I would love to know more about my Mortlock family tree and the origin of my family way before my Grandfather Fred Mortlock.

I hope you find this of interest. You can contact me on

My maternal grandmother was born in 1880 in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire. Her name was Alice Jane Mortlock, daughter of William Mortlock and Alice Flack. William was born in Shimpling, Suffolk in 1854. His father was George born 1826 and his father, Edward born 1803. I believe Edward's father was Abraham Mortlock born 1861 to Samuel Mortlock and Mary Clark. All from Shimpling. Anyone with Mortlock's with an interest in Shimpling or Burton on Trent, please e mail me at

Hi Tony,

I was surfing the web and came upon this interesting article on the Mortlock"s family, which caught my interest right away...my name is Patricia Ann Mortlock, I was born in Jamaica W.I. , my family background is very familiar with alot of the information that you have...from what I was told, my family orginated from off the coast of Normandy, France , they were French Anglo-Saxon. Our family name orginated from the rough lake that seperates France from England. it was called the dead lake ( mort-lock). they migrated to England and later became bankers...my greatgreat mother (who's name I don't know) was also related to Peter Flynn the british actor...anyways, their were three brothers and they were very involved in banking and real estate....they travelled to Jamaica on one of their expeditions and fell in love with the island...I was told that one the brother's migrated to Canada, one stayed in Jamaica and the other remained in England..... my greatgrand-father was a banker who acquired alot of real estate throught gambling , he owned alot of land on the western coast of Jamaica in the Montego Bay area... My grandfather Charles Mortlock whom I vaguely remember was born in England and raised in Jamaica and later marry Hilda Patton ( who's dad was also a wealthy real estate owner). They had six children, My dad Louis Charles Mortlock, my uncle's Stanley and Bruce Mortlock...aunts Lila, Marianna and Lillian are all deceased...... My immediate family consist of 10 brothers and sisters..... Marianna, Morris, Scotty, Michael Charles, Christopher, Patricia (myself), Andrea, Debbie, Charmaine, Ricky.......I have three children Stefan, Stayana and Yanick...............

My Mortlock is my great grandmother Ida May Gooday nee Mortlock, born 19.11.1892 in Shimpling, Essex. D of Margaret Mortlock unmarried Parlour maid. I know that Margaret married a Mortlock cousin and had seven more children, Frank Oliver Nellie Ruby Lily and twins who died young. My grandmother was a very intelligent and capable woman who left a deep impression on our family that lasts to this day. I think that Oliver was the naughty younger brother who got leathered for letting a farrowing sow out of her pen. I hear that the pig chased him up the lane and frightened him half to death. Sid married a Nellie possibly an Eleanor, but I don't know her surname. They had 2 children Jean and Gordon. I used to be taken to see Gordon as a small child...he had three children called Miranda Yasmin and Ralph. I would imagine they would now be in their late thirties...family legend says that the local Bishop took a deep interest in my great grandmother. He gave her a dictionary which she kept all her life and always used to find out any unknown words, as I believe he had instructed her to do. I am going to East Anglia in the summer, I will see if I can find out any more then.

I'm very much into geneology and have made many visits to England to trace my roots. I am a South Australian Mortlock, a direct descentant of the original Melbourn-born china-man William (1747-1807). His grandson, William, born in 1789 in London, who established himself in the Moat House, Melbourn is my great great grandfather. My great grandfather Simon came to Australia in the early 1830,s with his younger brother William Ranson. He died of a heart attack in 1860 in Port Lincoln while staying with William Ranson and his wife Margaret.   I'll get together all I have on the family and get it to you ASAP. Cheers.

My name is Norma Dench, my mother was Nellie Evelyn Mortlock.  She was one of 9 children born to Percy William Mortlock and Eliza Buckley.  My grandfather was one of three sons (I am unsure about sisters) born to Samual Mortlock of Shimpling Suffolk.  Samual became a police constable in Shimpling and later joined the Metropolitan Police at Arbour Square Police Station in Stepney, London.  He is listed in the 1881 census.  I believe he has a twin sister Mathilda who had at least 9 children.  His father was Robert Fenner Mortlock born 1812 in Shimpling, Suffolk and believe his mother may have been called Elizabeth..  I was always told that nearly the whole village of Shimpling was composed of Mortlocks.  There are certainly Mortlock graves in the local Church.   I have only today found your website and naturally was extremely facinated by all the information and the amount that was available.  I am currently in the process of trying to locate more information about the Shimpling Mortlocks.  If you are able to provide me with any references which might help my search, I would be extremely grateful.    I am currently using my son Michael's website which is why the Email address my not seem to crossmatch with my name.  I can appreciate that you are probably inundated with requests, but would be grateful for any help you are able to give.   Many thanks.

Hi Tony.

I am doing a bit of research into the life of the famous NZ Maori chief Hongi Hika who visited London and Cambridge in 1820. As you probably know there is a connection with the Mortlock family. Hongi stayed with William Mortlock in Cambridge and was presented to King George IV by Sir John Cheetham Mortlock. What details that are available in NZ about Hongi's visit are pretty sketchy and I would love to discover much more detail of day to day activities. Can anyone help?

Best wishes

R.J.H. Griffiths who has been the source of much of the information of this site, sent me some updates for the part of the tree to which I belong, for which I thank him. I am posting them here for now, so that they don't get lost before the tree itself gets updated.

The Joseph MORTLOCK, by then coffee house keeper, who married Fanny Dyer FOSTER at All Souls Marylebone 26.9.1852, gave his father as William MORTLOCK, butcher. This puts Joseph in frame to be the son of your William Henry and Jane nee CHAMBERS; Joseph's first wife Caroline Oxley CLEMENTS having died 3rd quarter 1849 in Lambeth. Fanny Dyer now MORTLOCK died 1st quarter 1863 in Lambeth; I suspect that the Fanny Chambers MORTLOCK who died 4th quarter 1854 in Camberwell was the child of this second marriage of Joseph (else why "Chambers?"). Dates all fit neatly together.

Your tree or Bob's shows Rosa Clementina 'marrying her uncle'. In 3rd quarter 1871 she married Francis Thomas O[?xley] CLEMENTS but I have not traced around any Clements trees to discover if this piece of Mortlock scandal is true.

Dear Tony,

Noticed your website and thought that I should advise that there is yet another Mortlock family out there.  We now live in Yorkshire, but our bit of the family mostly lived in the SE corner of the UK. My father, Frederick Sidney, now long dead, was born within the sound of Bow Bells in London (ie. a cockney) and for a time was a professional soldier, fighting in WW2,being at Dunkirk and Monte Cassino in Italy.   We lived in Brighton after WW2, where he was a bus driver and then a newspaper delivery driver.   His background is a bit shrouded in mystery because, very unusually for his earlier life, his working class ( I think ) parents got divorced in the early 1900s.  A rare event. As a result the family never talked about the family history.  One day I ought to look up his birthplace etc.

Anyone with knowledge about him would be welcome to contact me.

Sincerely

Donald Frederick Mortlock

Hi Tony

I note with interest the update of the 8th November about Joseph Mortlock.  As you know I am researching our family as well.  Joseph was my direct ancestor.  It may interest you that Richard Mortlock our oldest common direct Ancestor who got married to Hannah Gotto in 1783 was also a Butcher like his son William.  We know that Hannah Gotto was italian as my Aunt Janet Mortlock found a Gotto alive in England who knew about Hannah.  I have an updated family tree which I will send you when it is finished.

My name is Douglas Robinson Buck.  I am the grandson of George Hodgson Conan Mortlock.  He was married 24 Jul 1910 to Dorothy Alice Morley.  Our records show that she was born in Sussex, but I have been unable to confirm anything, not her date of birth, not her place of birth, nor her parents who are presumably Thomas Walter Morley and Mary Butcher.  Any information on these points would be deeply appreciated.

George and Dorothy had four children:

Peter Walter Mortlock, b. 22 Jan 1911 at London, London, England; d. 3 May 1974 at Andover, Tolland, Connecticut, USA

Marjorie Maud Mortlock (my mother), b. 22 Jul 1912 at Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada; d. 7 May 1979 at Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut, USA

George Chapman Mortlock, b. 5 May 1914 at Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA; d. 10 Apr 1982 at Vernon, Tolland, Connecticut, USA

Dorothy Mary Mortlock, b. 30 Jul 1917 at Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA; d.

This is a great site.  Thank you for providing it.

I have read your page with a great deal of interest.  I wish to inform you that there are Mortlocks in Canada as well.  My name is James Ross Mortlock and my father was William Edward Mortlock (Toronto B21 Jun 1914) and his father was Jack (James) John Mortlock (Toronto).  The family tree is a little rusty going back any further, but I have been told that we come from Great Britain although I can not say when. I have a brother Edward Alexander Mortlock in Vancouver and William John Mortlock near Toronto.  My sister is Marna Ann McGeorge (nee Mortlock).

With regard to the narrative and tree about William Mortlock the sometime Chapel Clerk of Emmanuel College, Cambridge that I sent a while back and which can be accessed via your excellent Mortlock website:

I am persuaded by a brilliant insight of Dr Geoff Mann of Little Bookham, a descendant of the Hundon (Suffolk) Mortlocks, that the Samuel b.'1752' who sired this William was the Samuel baptised in Hundon 20.9.1753. Dr Mann suggests that 'Wendon' in the Prayer Book inscription quoted by Diane is a mistranscription for Hundon. I concur in this, observing that (1) I have searched the registers of both Wendon Lofts and Wendons Ambro in Essex without finding any Mortlocks at all and (2) the ambiguity over Samuel's parents ('Samuel or John') shows that this inscription cannot have been made by anyone earlier that Samuel's grandson. This opens the way for 'Anne' Benson to become Mary Benson of Hundon, who married Samuel's father, another Samuel (and Geoff Mann's direct ancestor) in Bury St Edmunds on 1.7.1753 (do your own sums!).

Samuel snr's parents were Richard Mortlock of Hundon (d.1752-3) and Mary Doubty whom he married in Wixoe in 1724. Richard's line may either go back to Glemsford (which seems to be the source for another Richard who died in Hundon in 1710) or Haverhill where Mortlock references (in Essex Feet of Fines) go back to 1529; and a John Mortlock had land in Wixoe in 1524 (Suffolk Lay Subsidies).

I believe the material I sent previously should be amended as above - I shall send replacement files eventually.

Happy New Year!
