Hi Tony,

Came across your web site - excellent site!

My GGG grandmother was Liz Mortlock - see Cosford link below and follow Maria Griss, Ann Maria Turner, Kate May Turner, Kathleen V Shaw - my mother.

Do you think her mother was Liz Canler or Liz Candler?

I'm sure Ray Long would welcome this information so that he can extend the genealogy info on his web page.

Hi Tony.

My name is Nicola Joanne Mortlock (now Rudd) and my Grandfather is George Mortlock, originally from Colchester.  He had many brothers and one sister (whom I know died at around the age of 5) - I have been able to obtain this information from my Grandmother (age 93), Gladys.  She has told me that the family were very much involved with the Salvation Army in Colchester.  George and Gladys moved to Enfield, North London where George worked for London Transport looking after the 'time-keeping'.  He was a great watch and clock maker by trade.  Grandma was a hairdresser and in the 1950's - 1960's owned two hairdressing shops in North London.   George and Gladys had 3 children - Graham Mortlock, my father (myself Nicola and Louise are his daughters), Christina Mortlock (married Brian Fisher, Claire and James are their children) and Richard Mortlock (Mark, Joanna and Catherine are his children).   Hope this may be of interest for you.

Can you please tell me where you got the information about "Descendants of Christian Gotto" as supplied by Peter D.E. Mortlock?   "Christian Gotto" appears twice on our family tree, and the second generation's "Hannah Rebecca Gotto" also appears twice (as in 4 distinct individuals with different dates, spouses, children, etc.).   In all 4 cases, their spouses and children do not match those on your tree. I got most of my info originally from Arthur Gotto in the UK (we live on the east coast of Vancouver Island in BC), but then confirmed most of it on the International Genealogy Index microfiche in several archives here and in England.

It was spooky seeing Edith and John Henry's photo on the web page, they passed away long before I was born and I have only heard family stories about them. Apparently she was only 4'9" and took a size 1 in shoes! (I've not done much better, 5ft and size 3).

My grandfather is Herbert Henry, their second child (out of 11), and I am attaching a photo (now posted on Mortlock Portraits page) which he lent me many years ago (he died in December 1989, aged 93). This was taken in India in 1914 when he was in the Army.

He and his wife Florence Eliza Pillar ("Cissy") had 4 children, Joan, Doreen (my Mum) Nigel and Maurice. My Mum died in 1994. Auntie Joan is now in her 80's and in a residential home near Chelmsford, Maurice is also still living in Chelmsford, as are his two kids Carmella (now Prior) and Karl. Nigel died aged about 9 from diphtheria, I never knew him.

My Mum married Bill Dines in 1942. He played cricket professionally for Essex between 1945 and 1947. I came along in 1956 (eek, big 5-0) looming). I've no brothers or sisters.

I asked Gramps about our family tree back in 1984, and here is an extract from a letter he wrote to me on 28/2/84:

"Dear Julie and Hugh

My nephew Capt Alan Richardson is the one delving into the family history. First, the Mortlocks were all builders by trade. My Mother's family were the silk weavers. Surname was Farrant. Lived in Haverhill in Suffolk. Mortlocks came from Lincolnshire to Swavesey. Mum had 11 children, see separate list.....

Love to you both

Grandad"

The list he enclosed was:

Elsie
Ellen (died aged 5 1905)
Herbert
Edith
Frederick
Lilly
Cyril
Winifred
Wilfred
Eric
Gwendolen

I also have a picture of Nan Pillar which Gramps kept in his uniform pocket when he was away in WW1. He said he would come back for her and they would marry, which despite getting severely wounded and nearly losing his legs when fighting in Mesopotamia, he did! (He always referred to it as "Mespot"!)

If I can help with more photos and snippets do please get in touch.

I have been doing parallel research to you over the past 20 years and have just discovered this site. I can fill you in on the 100 or so descendents of Bertram, Simon and William if you would be interested.

Very briefly: Eric is in fact one of 6 children of Bertram and Claire (McCarthy)

Simon (and Clarice Sclanders) had 2 children- Grace and George

William (and Joyce Cooper) had my brother John and me.

I can give you the data in gedcom format for what I have of this side of the family.

Cheers

Tony, for the info of one and all, there is an article by me on Ethel Mortlock the portrait painter in the September edition of the UK Family Tree Magazine. Ethel appears to have been a member of the Banking Mortlock family.

Hi Tony ,

My name is Bob Austin and I came across your MORTLOCK website and Encyclopaedia
recently when looking for anyone researching MODLOCK family history.

I'm not sure if the following will be of interest given that there is only one reference to MODLOCK in your 'encyclopaedia' but here goes !

The reference to MODLOCK is the marriage of ELIZABETH MODLOCK to ROBERT WILLIS on 6th Sept 1838.

I am a descendent of this marriage as follows :-

Elizabeth Modlock and Richard Willis had a daughter MARY ANN WILLIS b. 25th Feb 1857 in Wivenhoe.

Mary Ann Willis married JOSEPH JAMES BRUCE , a Master Mariner who was born in St. Osyth , on 4th July 1879 at St. Botoplph's , Aldgate , London.

Mary Ann Willis and Joseph James Bruce moved to Guernsey where my grandfather PHILBERT EDMONDS BRUCE was born on 15th March 1888.

Mary Ann Willis died ( cancer ) in 1896 on Guernsey.

Joseph James Bruce moved his family to Goole , Yorks ( 1901 census ) and then on to Hull where he settled , remarried and died in 1926.

Philbert Edmonds Bruce married SARAH ANN TOMLINS , who was born in York and they had 9 children , one of whom was my mother LILIAN BRUCE b. 5th April 1920.

My mother married JOHN THOMAS AUSTIN in Hull on Nov. 20th 1943.

I was born in 1952 in Hull - my full name being ROBERT BRUCE AUSTIN.

I have copies of BMD certificates , parish records , some photographs of Mary Ann Willis and other information  if it is of any use to you.

Hope this is of interest and that it may help others

Regards

Bob

Louise asked for her email address to be written as above so that automatic email address harvesters don't recognise it, so you will need to adapt the first part of her email address to contact her. She also kindly provided pictures of the people mentioned above, which will eventually appear in the Mortlock portrait gallery page.

My name is Laura Elizabeth Mortlock (20), I recently came across this site and noticed my cousin Katherine had posted a family history. My father is Peter Graham (50) and I have one sister Ayesha Alexandria (7). I have been trying to research my family history for some time not only on my father's but also my mother's side. I would like to know if there are any other Mortlock's with a connection to anyone named Boocock as I haven't been able to find much about them. My grandfather was William Alfred (1927-1995) and he had 1 sister and at least 3 brothers.
