Mortlock Family Tree

THIS IS THE FOURTH ARCHIVE OF OLDER CORRESPONDENCE RECEIVED BY

THE MORTLOCK FAMILY TREE PAGE

4th ARCHIVE

Received 7th January 2005

My mother is Eileen Mortlock - husband (dec) William Ernest Shrimpton of Great Missenden Buck - they married there in June 1954 - I'm Jane Elizabeth b May 55, Mary Winifred b Nov 1956, Helen Ruth b Feb 1962 and Andrew John b May 1964 : Mum has an older brother Bill - married to Rose with a daughter Susan - now I know Uncle Bill married before mum & dad and Susie's around my age but I have no other details to hand : Nanna (Winifred Mortlock) was in service - I know mam & Uncle Bill had different dads and we have no details on who they were but Nanna didn't marry until mum was in her 20's ..... Nanna died a couple of years ago at the grand old age of 96!  She was the second youngest of 13 children from Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire - I know my cousin Alan Childerley (son of nanna's sister Gwen) had done some research so I'll have to see if mum's got a copy and then I can add that to your tree - which I will download at home ......

...... Off the top of my head, Nanna had the following :

sisters - Elsie (Nottingham) Gwen - married Bill Childerley : there was a younger sis who died : Cecily : Lily : I know there's some family over at Waddesdon : there was at least one brother who was killed in the 1st World War - and 1 or 2 who emigrated - think it was Dick (Richard) :
Great grandad was a builder and also a lay preacher (Methodist I think) : mum was given loads of old photos by cousins when nanna died (August 2002) - if I can get my scanner to work and she's still got them, I send them over - I'm pretty sure there was one of those Victorian family portraits .....

..... I remember mum once said my cousin Alan had traced the family back to either Sussex or Kent - and that there was something to do with a Huguenot silk weaver who'd come over and married a farmer's daughter - but nanna also said her mum told "all sorts of stories" so there's no knowing!  I do remember mum once showing me a big family tree Alan had done - I think back to either 14 or 15 something - I must admit I started googling today for Shrimpton - my dad's name as he's descended from a churchwarden's son in Penn who became a highwayman (and was then hanged) .....

..... I once visited the old family house in Godmanchester - near the Chinese bridge - and nanna used to tell us stories of having to walk (I think to Huntingdon) to school : apparently there's also a family history of migraines inherited through the female side - although nanna used to call them "sick headaches" - it skipped a generation with mum but all four of us plus both my boys have inherited it. After nanna's funeral the cousins that are still around gave mum loads of photos and contact details - for California and Canada as well as the uk - as soon as I have those, I'll forward those as well just in case they can fill in any more gaps.

What an excellent web site - and so much more research to do!  I am looking for connections to my husband's great great grandfather, Thomas Mortlock born Swavesey Cambs about 1843.  He married Eliza ? from Needingworth in Hunts and they moved to Holywell cum Needingworth. Lived in High Street and then in Front Street between 1871 and 1891 definite  and if I can add up right had 12 children Samuel Emma Hepzibah Lizzie  Thomas Kate John Jannett Julia Ruth Martha and Alice.  Jannett (sic) was born in Holywell in 1874.  She married John James Manning Medlock in Huntingdon in 1897 and moved to Coventry where she died in 1947.  She was my husband's great grandmother. Any information would be very welcome, together with tips for opening Robert's files as I can't get them to open in my version of Word.

Has anyone any pictures or information on Samuel james Mortlock, or his son, Samuel James Alec, who were hatters at 95 Gracechurch St, London in the 1880-90s. I know the elder Mortlock's widow died in 1924, but their son (Alec) seemed to have no children. Anyone out there decended from that line? It appears that either the elder or 'Alec' was my grandfather through a lady called Elizabeth Nixon, who lived in Hackney!

Hi Tony.

My brother Ross in Calgary has a letter posted on your archive site from Dec 28/02 and I do have more information.  Our Great Grandfather was Alfred MORTLOCK and he married ???? HEATHFIELD and emigrated to Canada or U.S.from Faversham in 1906 as near as we can make out. ( I have no further  info on his parents or whether he had brothers or sisters but it seems a safe bet that he probably did. ) They had 4 sons and 3 daughters.  Alfred, John (Jack), Earl, Bernard, Ella, Viola, Queenie. Alfred went to Grand Island, N.Y.(wife's name not known but possibly MAY) and they had 3 children Alfred, Ethel and a second daughter (name unknown) John (my grandfather) married Eliza McQUAY(known also as HAY) and lived in Toronto.  They had a son William(my Dad) who married my mother Margaret HUNTER and a daughter Jean who married Robert BRUCE. Earl married (????) , lived in Toronto and had 2 daughters and 2 sons. Florence, Viola, Jack,Earl .  Viola is still living in Toronto Bernard married (????) , lived in Philadelphia and had a son Clifford  and daughter Kathleen (who never married, was a school teacher and retired in 1986 to Ojai, California). Ella was in Florida. I have no marriage details but 2 children - Teresa and Eileen. Viola was in Virginia. I have no marriage details but 2 children - Olga and Gloria. Queenie also in Virginia with no marriage details other than June Fay - a daughter perhaps?

If anyone out there can shed a little more knowledge on any of these areas (particularly going back in time to England) it would certainly be appreciated.

Here are some extracts from several emails received over the last few weeks from Jane Shrimpton (her first post is above dated 7th January 2005). Robert Griffiths has now incorporated information from Jane into the documents available for download from a "MORTLOCK ENCYCLOPEDIA" .

Mum says I muddled some of dad's family with Nan's ..... But there again a lot of my info did come from Nanna and she did get very muddled in later years!  Although the old story about a silkweaver would appear to have been correct after all, according to the 1881 Census of Haverhill.

Mum has given me two sets of family trees - JOHN & MARY Mortlock from 1793 onwards - down to Nanna : and also 2 branches of the FARRANT family which she was given by Sue Farrant.  Mum can remember Nanna mentioning cousins down in London .... Herbert Farrant of Haverhill married a Lizzie and they moved to Kennington.

Hope they make interesting reading - mum has promised to give me the whole of the Elsie to Gwendolen downlines.  I know I have a cousin Louie in Waddesdon, but can't remember where she fits in.....

Saw mum last night and she gave me some more info - I have the lines down from the 11 children of John Henry Mortlock and Edith Farrant but it's in a handwritten format and she wants me to type it up so I'll do that today and send it on.

She also gave me copies of the 1851 census and some other records in regard to the Farrants of Haverhill from 1979 to 1924 (or at least that's how I read them) - makes some interesting reading!  There was a James Uriah Farrant who was in Bury Gaol for "maliciously breaking windows" a Matthew Farrant noted as "Dissenter-Workhouse aged 77"; an Eliza in Burton End marked as "aged 2 yrs 6 mon burnt to death 27th"; a lot of poor house entries; an Elizabeth marked as "visitation of god"! Innkeepers, soldiers ....

Saw mum again yesterday and she gave me some more info :
  • Herbert Henry - wife was known as Cissy - had 2 girls and a boy Maurice - mum has given me Maurice's address in Chelmsford so I'm going to write to him and ask for more info.
  • Mum has no details on Uncle Cyril (married Dollie Twigden)
  • Aunt Lilly (Lillian May married Dollie's brother George Twigden) - Mum has given me her daughter Betty's address so I'm going to write to her for details on Aunt Lily but also to see if she has anything on Uncle Cyril.
  • Mum thinks Eric had a son Tony but she knows nothing further.
  • Aunt Gwen - married Bill Childerley - had Thelma, Beryl, Ronnie & Brian
  • Mum said to write to (Uncle) Bill Childerley who may know re Uncle Eric - and to also ask all of them for any details on the rest of the family - as there are at least two more Mortlock lines down.

Thank you for implementing the last set of upgrades to the Mortlock Encyclopedia - here are nine more!

Arnold Jeacock who is a descendant of the Hempstead, Essex Mortlocks has kindly copied me on his tree and various certificates and census records. This has resolved some uncertainty in 'Essex' and also homed some unattributed records in Camberwell. He also sent me some other material he had collected relating to other lines which I have incorporated.

Edward Mortlock in Canada has adumbrated what I had on his line of Clare Mortlocks and given me some additional data.

Grateful if you could replace the existing files when time affords, regards, Robert.

Sam Benady has put me onto The Five Sons of Bare Betty by Arthur Murray which gives more detail relating to Patrick, 5th Lord Elibank, the putative father of the sailors Lewis and James Mortlock. I have used this to update the Kirtling story and the Clare/Denham tree showing these Mortlocks, see the two files attached as replacements for those at present included in the Mortlock Encyclopedia. I discovered today that two ancestors of mine met while working for the Mortlock family circa 1890.

My father's aunt, Mary Elizabeth Lilley went to work for "Miss Mortlock" at Meldreth Court, Cambridgeshire as a "lady-in-waiting", according to her granson who was brought up by her. While there she met the man she married, a "groom domestic" by the name of Charles Day.

It's probably a very long shot but I wonder if any member of the Mortlock family might have photos from that period showing their household?

At least I know now, thanks to your intererstng site, what the Mortlocks were famous for.

Best Wishes

Came across your site while researching my Mortlock ancestory.  Would appreciate if anybody can help me!

My g-g-g-grandfather came to Australian in 1855 with his wife.  He was Joseph Mortlock c.1820.  He married Jane (Powell?).  He died at Thalaba, Dungog near Newcastle, NSW on 6/12/1869 aged 48 years and his death record lists his parents as Richard and Fanny (possible Sarah).  They had two daughters only - Elizabeth who married William Eason and Ellen Sophia (my g-g-grandmother) who marked Edwin Curtis Marsh.  Jane Mortlock's headstone states she was from Gloucestershire, England.

Thanks ... Sheryl Fisher

Hi, Well this is a sligtly different type of posting but I, along with some others are looking for a Julia Mortlock who graduated from St. Hilda's boarding school, Southport, Queensland, Australia in 1975. There is to be a St Hilda's Old girls Reunion on the last week-end of October. If anyone can help get the message to Julia that would be fantastic.

Brett Greenacre (who married Susannah Mortlock in 1860) was my late grandmother's grandfather.   I have more information on the Greenacres if you would like to add it to the site. <<< I need to investigate the John (& Hannah) Greenacre connection. Brett Greenacre's father John died aged 79 on 30th May 1859 at Kenny Hill, Mildenhall. >>>   Similarly, I have a bit more information on the Mortlocks (starting with Thomas Mortlock & Abigail Rutterford m 1839 in Mildenhall with James Frost & Esther Mortlock as witnesses) using census information from 1851, 1861, etc.   Note: It is interesting that James Frost & Esther Mortlock could write their own names, whereas Thomas & Abigail could only put their mark (not unusual in those days).   FYI, Susannah Mortlock had a sister Susan b 2nd January 1842. I suspect that she died in infancy but I have been unable to find any evidence to back this up.   It would be nice to add another piece to the jigsaw... especially after getting so much information from your site.   Keep up the good work...   Regards,

My name is Patrick Hacon living near Great Yarmouth.

My grandmothers name was May (not Mary) Cecilia Mortlock whose father was John Thomas Mortlock born 1865 at Hilgay near Downham Market. Their home was 13 Bridge Road from local directories1909 to 1948 and in 1952 Thomas was not here so I assume he died between those years.

In the 1891 census John Thomas Mortlock (head - cab driver - age 26) lived at no 13 Row 23 with his wife Emily (age 24 born Colchester) and children Samuel (son age 5 - born in Melrose, Mass. USA) Harry W (age 4) May C (daughter age 2) and an unnamed infant.

May C Mortlock married Charles Norris and had four daughters, Emily (oldest - now 92 and still alive - now Emily Hacon), Peggy (the youngest who died first married a US airman and moved to Penns. USA - later remarried and moved again) other daughters were May (Aldous) and Violet (Tye) who both passed away recently.

Emily has four sons and one daughter, all living in the Great Yarmouth area, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

John T's father was John Mortlock also born at Hilgay.

In Cooks Directory of Great Yarmouth 1894 he lived at 20 Church Plain where he was proprietor of the Victoria Dining Rooms (established 1837) which also offered "Well Aired Beds". Your entry shows the address as 3 Westlake Plain which is not correct although it does look like this on the 1891 census. This area changed its numbers and description several times and was later known as Brewery Plain (Lacon's Brewery being across the road from the Wrestlers) .

This building was between the famous Wrestlers Public House (where Lord Nelson stayed in 1801) and the Gallon Pot previously known as Burroughs Wine Bar (on my fathers tree James Hacon married Elizabeth Burroughs in 1801 and a witness at the wedding was W N Burroughs the proprietor).   There are some nice stories mum used to tell me of J T's work. He drove a handsome cab where he wore white gloves and a top hat - his stables and cab were at the White Horse Pub in Northgate Street - mum used to take his dinner there from 13 Bridge Road (the other side of the river). He had several fingers missing but we did not know how this happened.    I am getting more and more information thanks to a local historian Colin Tooke but your web site has shown the origins of the Yarmouth Mortlocks very well.   I hope to hear from the descendants of May Cecilia's brothers and sisters.

I've just been looking at Robert Griffiths' article on the MORTLOCK family in Suffolk and spotted an Ann MORTLOCK who married Robert SPALDING at Gazeley in 1705. Ann was the daughter of John and Ann(e) MORTLOCK(E) and was baptised at Gazeley in 1681; her parents had (at least) two other children in Gazeley - Samuel (1684) and Mary (1685).

I can't say much about the Michael MORTLOCK who married there in 1691 except that his bride's name looks as though it could be SUELL - Boyd's marriage index has her down as SEWELL (possibly from the BTs).
