Mortlock Family Tree THIS IS THE THIRD ARCHIVE OF OLDER CORRESPONDENCE RECEIVED BY THE MORTLOCK FAMILY TREE PAGE 3RD ARCHIVE Received 18th February 2003 I am trying to tie up some loose ends on our family tree, My Great Great Grandmother.I am looking for descendants or ancestors of Martha Mortlock born around 1861 in the Saffron Waldon area we believe she worked "in service" at Audley End house and that she was married around 1879. If anyone can help in this matter it would be gratefully appreciated. Colin MacIntosh Received 24th March 2003
Jill Received 15th April 2003 William Ashton Mortlock born 13.9.1863, died about 1930, married Harriet Foreman born 15.7.1869, died about 1942. They had 12 children, 9 survived to adulthood. All were born in Romford, Essex, England. Barbara Received 8th June 2003 I have just started researching my Mortlock family and I came across your web page. My great (3X) grandfather (Dr. Edgar Barker) was married to an Ann Mortlock (born 1805 Middx. London). Her parents were William Mortlock (1778-1833) and Elizabeth Evans. If you have any information on the generations before, I would love to see it. It looks like the Mortlocks were a very interesting family. Dan Fletcher Victoria B.C. Canada Received 22nd July 2003 My name was Elizabeth Mortlock, before I married and became a Small. I am one of two, my sister being Christine, who lives in South Devon. Our father, no longer with us, was Geoffrey Mortlock, Diplomat and journalist (co-author of "The Flowing Bowl", which is mentioned on your books page), and our Grandfather was Charles Percy Mortlock, (RN, stationed in Malta) My sister has far more information about the family tree and no doubt she will be digging out whatever she can find, but we are descended from the Cambridge Mortlocks - the banking family, of that I am sure. When in Australia a few years ago, I made a trip to Adelaide to see the Mortlock Library and learn a little more about the family over there....very interesting! liz@smallconsultancy.fsnet.co.uk Received 31st August 2003 Absolutely fascinating, there was almost nothing the last
time I looked for Mortlock, but that was back in1997! Received 6th September 2003
Hi Tony,
My name is Keith Mortlock, I live in Swardeston, Nr. Norwich, Norfolk. My Father, Francie Morris, was born in Norwich but Grandfather came from Peldon near Colchester, Essex. His name was Alfred Morris Mortlock, his father being George Mortlock. George was a Farm Labourer as was Alfred, until he moved to Norwich when he took on the trade of a Builder. I'm not sure where this fits in your family tree, if at all, as I'm only just starting to piece together information, consequently anything you may have will be of assistance.
Many thanks,
Keith
Received 20th September 2003 My name is Philip Mortlock and
I am 47 years old and have a family here in Sydney Australia. My father is Bryce
(Harold) Mortlock, a noted Australian architect married to my mother Peggy and I
have two brothers Richard and Peter. Received 23rd October 2003 Tony, I am David Scott Mortlock and
I have three daughters (one of which is Amanda (b1980)...which I think coincides
with what you perhaps named your daughter). Received 1st January 2004 Dear Tony,
I do not
have any other information about any other relatives as my father has parkinsons
disease, so he cannot remember who his parents are. He does however have at
least one brother called Bob. Age unknown. I would like to go back as far as i
can to build an accurate tree for my children to see when they are older. I hope
you can help with any ideas or suggestions. I would appreciate any information
you have. Received 7th February 2004 I would like to find descendants of Anne Elizabeth Mortlock married to Alexander William Phillips (year 1845 Madras, India). Anne was daughter of Charles. Alexander parents were William Edward Phillips & Janet Bannerman. William was Governor of Penang (from 1819-1824). Do you know any these Mortlock descendants. Winson Saw Received 12th February 2004 This message is a response to Carrington John Mortlock's Message above, dated 1st January 2004. I had not heard of your father until this last Friday when I was browsing WO363/M2030 in the PRO which contains the salvaged records of some WW1 soldiers. George William Mortlock was a gunner who on 29.6.1918 married Florence Henrietta TUNDRIDGE [may be wrong spelling, difficult to read]. 26.3.27 they had a son Anthony Ivor. Bet this note is a surprise for you! Geo Wm was probably the son of
Robert William, who had worked his way up from porter to carriage and wagon
examiner in Cranham, Essex. Robert Wm (born 1Q1870 Hadleigh, Essex) and his wife
Fanny Rebecca (born 1870ish Barking) were killed by a German bomb on their home
in Victoria Row Cottages, Upminster 3Q1940. Robert William (or William Robert)
was the son of William Mortlock 1827-1Q1897 and his wife Susan 1833-3Q1899. Both
these died somewhere in the Romford registration district. I have no data at the
moment about William's origins. Rgds Robert Griffiths. Received 20th February 2004 Tony - baubles for the Mortlock cybernetic Christmas Tree. 1. Here are updated replacements for the China and Chapel Mortlock trees. 2. Also three new files, on the Mortlocks of Norfolk, and Essex, and the Mortlock blacksmiths of West Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. No doubt I shall have updates to these in the fullness of time but I think they are about as far on as I can manage for now. Sorry that I am still stuck in
Works format, but I hope these files can still be penetrated by people who use
Word. Rgds Robert.

Robert's articles can be downloaded from the "Downloads" section near the top of this page. Once again, "Thank you" Robert for your tremendous contributions to the Mortlock Family Tree page and to other Mortlock related pages. - Tony. Received 1st March 2004 We are looking for information
about my wife's family who are decended from the Mortlocks from Higham in
Suffolk UK near Bury St Edmunds- we have got as far back as Henry born 1845. Are
you aware of anyone who may be able to assist? Received 4th March 2004 Another little offering for your website. MORTLOCK MYSTERIES (this has also been added to the downloads section, it includes information about Ethel the Portrait Painter, Nina and the Earl, Mortlock's Modern Dairies). I can't now remember where I
read this, but the errant transportee John Frederick Mortlock is credited with a
major contribution to the English language - the word toe-rag, which it its
original meaning as a foot cloth (rather than its modern perjorative meaning)
has its earliest traceable written use in his book 'Experiences of a Convict'. 5, Towers Garden, Havant, Hants PO9 1RZ, England tel. 0/44 23 9248 2516 Received 15th March 2004
Hi, Received 10th April 2004 (along with an update for the downloads section) I have been googling: Some Mortlock titbits: 1. www.harpers.org/APrisonAnecdote.html#1-anchor carries a reprint of an article from Harper's Weekly of 11.4.1851 describing the wrongful imprisonment for theft of a Charlotte Mortlock in 1834. A highly diverting tale if rather a sad one. Haven't placed this Charlotte. 2. There are some etchings by
WK Mortlock for sale from 1907-1940 covering the area around Doncaster. I shall
try and find out more about WKM. For now, he seems to be from the Mortlocks of
Barton Mills near Mildenhall. Happy easter! Robert.

Added 3rd May 2004 Three more Mortlock titbits: 1. Pteropus Phaeocephalus is the Latin name for the Mortlock fruit bat, recognised internationally as an endangered species. I imagine rising sea levels will do for it in the end. Difficult to read the writing on the wall if you are hanging upside down. 2. Private George Mortlock of the Royal Marine Light Infantry was awarded the Royal Humane Society's bronze medal on 3rd January 1889, while serving in Shanghai aboard HMS Cockchafer. 3. Spacroft Models are selling a model of a 1965 Bedford van carrying the logo for "Mortlock Dairies", who were situated in Manor Park, East London. Rgds Robert

My name is Jonathan Mortlock, My father Philip Mortlock has
already posted some information on your Mortlock site. Received 1st August 2004
Here's a challenge for movie buffs:-
In 1936 a British 'thriller musical' loosely based on Bizet's Carmen (only the bullfighter was a boxer, etc) came out called 'Melody of my Heart'. Reviews on the internet give it a star and a half out of five, if that, and it seems to be deservedly forgotten. However the cast credits include (pretty low down) a Doris Mortlock. If this is Naughty Nina who gave her name on marriage to her earl in 1963 as Doris Aileen, age 47 then she would be 20 or so when the film came out (say 19 when it was filmed). Does anyone know any more about her? Stage work? Was her earl a stage-door Johnnie? In 1963 she gave her father as Saunders Alexander Mortlock, medical practitioner, deceased. Does anyone know anything about him? I can't find a 1916/7 British birth for Doris/Nina so suspect she may be Antipodean or from elsewhere in the Empire. Her description of him as 'of London' may relate to him in retirement as I haven't managed to pick up on him in directories etc. Someone with access to between-the-wars medical directories of Australia, NZ, S Africa etc could perhaps help. The internet also produces the tantalising statement that after marrying her earl she and he went out to Madeira to grow bananas. Any Madeiran Mortlocks 'out there' who know anything? No prizes for this of course,
but I thought a Mortlock film actress might be of interest.

Received 12th November 2004 Hi, I came across your Mortlock page and I am thrilled! My grandmother's (Mary Josephine Mortlock, born Jan. 16. 1903 - died Sept. 4, 1994 Langley, BC, Canada) parents were William Henry Mortlock born about 1880 in Bermondsey, London, England (died April 22, 1949 in Vancouver, BC, Canada) who married Marsh Ada Riches born 1878 in Sheatham, Surrey, England (resided in Sawbridgeworth until emigrating to Canada in 1910) died June 12, 1954 in Richmond BC, Canada.
I don't have anything else at this time. Any other
information would be very welcome. Thanks

Received 14th November 2004 Hello from Tasmania, Tony. For 3 years now, I've been researching for a book on a British amphibious military expedition in 1798, in which I find Commander LEWIS MORTLOCK, of HMS Wolverine, played an important & courageous part. I have also recently returned from the PRO/TNA at Kew in London, armed with 4 kgs. of photo-copying, amongst which are copies of a number of letters from that year, written to the Admiralty by Lewis ; mainly on the handling aspects of his newly commissioned command. As you may know, he was killed in action early the following year, surely a great loss the the R.N., & a very promising career cut prematurely short. A portrait of him is held at the Greenwich Maritime Museum in London. Just a very long shot, I'm sure, but I wonder if any of the Mortlock family descendants out there have any other correspondence written in 1798 by Lewis , such as personal papers, etc.? I'd be very interested to know please. Also, I read on the web that Lewis was buried at Gosport, near Portsmouth, in southern England. Do any of the "extended" Mortlock family out there have more explicit information on it's location, etc. please ? Anyone interested, I'd be happy to share copies of the PRO letters mentioned above, if they'd contact me on my email : gargoyles1@bigpond.com Allan Wood Received 25th November 2004 I am Iain Mortlock and I live in
Peterborough. This is what I know about the Mortlock side of my family:- Received 27th November 2004
Dear Tony,
I am trying to trace a Mary Cable who came to Australia on the Young William . I am unsure if she came as a married woman or not, she was married to Robert Cable who came on Duke of Portland as a convict. Received 18th December 2004 My name is Laura Rae Mortlock (now Mortlock-McMinn). My Uncle, Keith Ingram Mortlock, has been tracing the Mortlock family tree on and off for many years. He, too, can trace our family back to James Mortlock and the Mortlock islands. Perhaps he would recognize some of the names on the family tree that show on the website. I can only go back a couple of generations without his help but I am wondering if we connect into the family tree that you've trace. My grandfather was Donald Mortlock, the second of 3 boys between Edwin Mortlock and Robert Mortlock. Donald has 2 sons. My Uncle Keith is the oldest and my father, Peter Donald Mortlock, is the youngest. Edwin and George were both family names, altered between the oldest boy of each generation.

Received 20th December 2004 Twelve years after I discovered I had a Mortlock ancestor, I have now, like the lady in the song, gone about as far as I can go in researching Mortlock genealogy - which isn't to say I shall always welcome new inputs that give me a lead to come back to the subject. However I can't see much further value in CRO field trips and so forth although if I find myself in Worcester or Maidstone or Aylesbury I might have a further dip in the well. So, here are the results - 1.18Mbytes in 18 files which print down to 400 pages of A4. I have divided the files up so that any one individual descendant should find all their line on just one of them. There are, I am afraid, many loose ends and if someone cleverer than me can sort them out I will update the tables accordingly.
