Angela Gill Saunders sent this April 1999

My maternal grandfather was Leslie William Mortlock, one of the four sons of George Mortlock, who my grandfather said was from Tonbridge Wells. George had a brother, John, and both were given bibles which are still in the family. Two of my grandfathers' brothers were Percy and Harold. The fourth son died early in life. Leslie Wm. Mortlock married Winifred Kate Robinson around 1920. My mother, Patricia Kathleen Mortlock was born to them October 6, 1927, near London. She married Arthur John Gill in 1950, and had three girls, Angela Kathleen (b.1951); Helen Mary (b. 1954) and Elizabeth Anne (b. 1958). The Gills emigrated to the US on November 2, 1967.

My name is Rob Mortlock, (born Rye east sussex) My father was Michael Mortlock, and I have 2 uncles: Derek and Bernard (both living in south Africa)They were all born in Billericay Essex, their father being George Mortlock (from Aldgate, east london I think) Unfortunately neither of my uncles can remember much about their grandfather so my family history is somewhat limited to say the least! however I do know there is some connections with the Suffolk area on our side. I have 2 cousins (Bernard's children) Karen and Martin , none of this (my) generation have any offspring yet.

Hello Tony. Found your page. My great-grandfather (paternal) was George Mortlock and his wife was Maria. Can't recall my grandfather's name -he died when my father was two, but think it was George also. My father was Charlie, and I have 2 brothers, Brig-gen (Ret) Roger Mortlock and Larry. The Mortlock name for our immediate family stops here - there are no sons for my brothers and my father was one of 2 brothers, with his brother having no natural sons. Roger found a grave the other day, in Taranaki province here, that was for William Mortlock and his wife Ellen Sophia Mortlock. He died 7 Dec 1890 aged 46, she on 2 May 1932, aged 75. I remember my father talking about Sophia, a tough wilful woman, who got her own way. I'm not sure how she links into our family, but was definitely related.  Anyway, if your family has a New Zealand link, maybe we are it. fun seeing your page anyway. Regards, Marcia Mortlock Walmsley, Gisborne. New Zealand.

G'Day Tony,

I have just stumbled accross your home page while searching for some information on the Mortlock Islands.  My name is Gavin Mortlock and I arrived here in Singapore wth my family in August last year.  I have had a look at the family tree on your site but do not recognise any connections.I will contact my father in Sydney, Australia, to see if he can shed some light on his tree but here is all I know....My Father is Bryan Kenneth Mortlock, born 9 January 1927 in Sydney.  He married Isabel Nelly Anderson and has three children; Judith Caroline (21/1/55), Kenneth Clive, (19/4/58) and Gavin Philip (17/5/63).  Judy married Stephen Bennett and has two sons James and Anthony (I will find out all the relevent details for the tree).  Ken married Lyn and he has no children.  I married Michelle Jo-Ann Kay and we have one son, Cooper Declan Mortlock (5/9/86).I would like to claim close relationship to the current Australian Rugby Union representative, Sterling Mortlock, but apart from both having grown up in Sydney, I know nothing about him or his family.  There was however a Mortlock in the first Australian Rugby team to tour England. If you are interested I can provide more details on my family including all the correct birth dates etc. Are we the only Mortlock's in Singapore? Regards Gavin Mortlock.

My name is Keith Mortlock, Kalamazoo, MI USA.  My grandfather George Selfe Mortlock came from England as an infant.  Life magazine published an article in the late 1940' s that made reference to the Mortlock Islands.  If you would like me to copy it and send it to you let me know.  I also notice that one of the family records that was posted on your web mentioned a Rebecca Lucy Mortlock.  I have a Great Great Great Grandmother Lucy Rebecca Mortlock  nee Ricker.  I wonder if there would be a connection somewhere with a child being named for an aunt or something.  I can trace my line back to a Thomas Mortlock who had a brother John Cheatham Mortlock, One of them was "sheriff" of an area near Birmingham.  I'll dig the information out and provide more details next week.  I'm glad we have a site to trade information and may we'll fine a connection.  My e-mail is

We are not of the Mortlock family but have 4 lithograph pictures by John Mortlock.  We are trying to find out about whatever we can about him but so far have not much information.  The litho's are of English homes..Any info would be appreciated. The pictures are of buildings, as follows:

#1 Shakespears Birthplace    Stratford-upon-avon   Warwickshire not dated but numbered 13

#2 Mary Arden's House  Wilmcote, near Stratford-upon-avon numbered 34 dated 1972

#3 Anne Hathaway's Cottage, shottery, Stratford-upon-avon numbered 9 not dated

#4 Hall's Croft, old town, Stratford-upon avon numbered 35 dated 1973

We have been searching the web for information as to the artist and have found nothing to date.  There seems to be an author by the same name but no idea whether this may be the same John Mortlock.  Thank you for any help you may be able to give. Sue Knapp

I am not a Mortlock, but one who is interested in the Mortlock family.  I read a book many years ago called "Experiences of a Convict" written by John Frederick Mortlock. The book was first published in 1864 and went on sale in London for one shilling.  In the book Mortlock tells the story of how he was defrauded by his grandfather, and when he retaliated he was charged, tried in a court of law and transported as a convict to Australia in 1843 for a period of 21 years.  John describes his suffering in a prison hulk in Plymouth Harbour, the four month trip in the convict ship "Maitland" and his suffering in the penal colony of Tasmania (Van Diemans Land) Australia. I have an interest in the book.  My own Great Grandfather ( a one armed Welsh shepherd named David Leyshan) ) was also transported in 1841. He met John Mortlock in 1854 at Pipers River, Tasmania.  This is described in John's book on pages 131-133. John Mortlock was an educated man and this helped him to survive as a convict. I don't know if John Frederick Mortlock is related to your family, however just in case I have attached a family history sheet for Johns grandparents John and Elizabeth Mortlock. I hope this is of some interest to you. Barry Leyshan Sydney Australia.

My name is Joy Travisano, nee MORTLOCK.  I was born in Whitby, North Yorkshire, UK.  My Father, James William Mortlock (now sadly deceased three years), was born in Eston, Cleveland, UK.  I was interested to see that you knew about the Mortlock Islands.  I came across them when spending a year-and-a-half in the Marshall Islands, South Pacific.  I never did get to visit them, but it is still on my mind to do so.  How interesting that one of our ancestors gave those Islands their name - or shall I say, re-named them.

I am just beginning the search on my family tree, a fascinating, if long-winded business. At the moment I have very little information on my Father's side as much was destroyed in a house-fire many years ago. However, clutching at straws, I came across your page. I was born Teresa Florence Christina Morse, daughter of Frederick John, Granddaughter of Frederick George Henry, and Great-Granddaughter of William John  and Christina nee Mortlock. Christina was apparently born in Scotland, but her mother died and she was raised in the east end of London by two aunts. She died in 1936 and is buried in West Ham Cemetary, London.  Looking at the family names, I saw that many Mortlocks were also named William, Gearge, Henry or all three. I wondered if there is any connection. If I am able to find any more information, I will be sure to let you know. Yours sincerely, Teresa Walker

Here are more Mortlocks in case any are familiar or you want to add them to the collection. I am Patricia A. Donehoo. My maternal grandfather was the Reverend Bertram John Mortlock, born in Nottingham, England on June 17, 1878. His parents, William John Mortlock & Alive Weedon, migrated to England from Scotland to work in the lace mills. Bertram moved to the USA as a boy & settled with his family in the Williamsburg section of New York City among other poor immigrants. On Feb. 10, 1897, he married Florence Adina Odell. They had 6 children; Eugene, Stanley, Donald, Florence (Dolly) & Ruth. Only Ruth (87) & Donald's wife (90's) are still living. I would be interested in any other information you receive on the Mortlocks. I can be reached at

I am just getting into researching my genealogy and found your website on the Mortlock name.  My mother's maiden name was Mortlock.  Her father was Frederick Arthur Mortlock and his father, my great grandfather, lived in London and got married in the Church in South Audley Street, London before he moved up to York with his wife (Anne Huscroft) and settled there.   I am told by my aunt that William Wilding's grandfather was a yeoman warder at the tower of London and that his son was born there.  Does any of this ring any bells with your side of thefamily tree?  It would be great to make some more links if possible.   Liz Blackham

I am Diane from Cardiff, South Wales U.K. and I have been very interested reading about the various 'Mortlocks'. You may or may not be interested in my line of information, this having been taken from the information written in the front of a book of common prayer printed @1770 which was handed down to me from my grandmother. These Mortlock men were chapel clerks at Emmanuel College, Cambridge and the district of Cherryhinton is often mentioned.   Charles William Clifford (aka Clifford Charles) Mortlock born 27.08.1845 in Cambridge married Ellenor Lemmis and they had three daughters one of whom was my great grandmother. They were all living at Crowborough, Sussex in 1886, but the daughters ended up in South Wales upon marriage so I assume the family moved here before then.   Here goes:

Samuel or John Mortlock born 1726 in Essex married Anne Benson of Wenden, Essex. They had one son.

1    Samuel Mortlock born 1752 died 1830, married Maria Anna Sharp. They had one son.

1    William Mortlock born 22.08.1794 died 09.02.1849, married Mary Anne Cook of Cambridge in 1817. They had two sons.

1    Frederick Henry Mortlock born 1818 in St Giles Cambs. married Mary Anne Bevan. No further info.

2    Charles William Mortlock born 19.10.1819, married Sarah Rix in 1844. They had three children. I assume she died as in 1851 he married Ann Shepherd of Southwark and went on to have six more children. Children with Sarah Rix

1    Charles William Clifford(aka Clifford Charles) born 27.08.1845, married Ellenor Lemmis. They had three daughters.

2    Julia Marian Mary born 02.01.1847. No further info.

3    Alice Mary Mortlock born 1848, married Monsieur Alfred Masse and moved to Paris. They had two sons.

Children with Ann Shepherd

1    Walter William Charles Mortlock born 02.01.1852, married Lizzie Buck of Market Deepney, Lincolnshire and proceeded to New York.

2    Arthur William Mortlock born 14.11.1854 died 13.10.1860.

3    Ann Shepherd Mortlock born 30.10.1855, married Henry Arthur Reynolds in 1875 and proceeded to New Zealand.

4    Rosina Ellen Mortlock born 12.08.1857.

5    Alfred Henry Mortlock born 25.07.1860.

6    Kate Arthur born 28.10.1863.

Cheers Diane
