The Mortlock Blacksmiths The distinguishing features of these Mortlocks are (a) Mortlocks called Michael, (b) Mortlocks who are blacksmiths and (c (= a.b)) Mortlocks who are both. This is a similar pattern to the Mortlocks of Chippenham, Cambs. Although there seems to have been a Mortlock in Hawstead in 1568, the main family are all descended from a Michael who died and left a will in 1757. There s a little unsolved puzzle here, which is why did Michael s Michael became a wigmaker with the smithy passing to the third brother, James? The smith, a mighty man is he - perhaps young Michael wasn t, and did not grow up to have arms as strong as iron bands. His wigmaking, too was not profitable enough for his widow to escape the poor-house. One line leads to London via the army and thence to Portsmouth. The main line in Lawshall, of blacksmiths, complete with one called Michael, comes from this Hawstead family. However there are several other records in the parish register which do not seem to be connected with this line - perhaps non-Lawshall Mortlock brides marrying Lawshall men. In another direction, there is a link to Freckenham via Michael s son Charles; so perhaps these smiths were Worlington Mortlocks originally, where Robert the smith died in 1650. All told there are at least twenty-seven smiths in these tables, most and probably all related, pumping their bellows in Worlington, Hawstead, Lawshall, Cheveley, Chippenham, Freckenham, Long Melford, Barrow, Bury St Edmunds, Isleham and Woodditton. Eventually the smiths branched out into general engineering, as can be seen from the tables. See also the longer article about these Mortlock blacksmiths.
