Yes, there do probably exist records around the country that could perhaps elucidate these trees, even the descents from Johns, Jameses or Williams. But sometimes even the trick of kicking a family back to the widowed mothers county of origin doesnt seem to work. Some of the entries which follow come from the Probate Register and show where people finish up rather than where they started from. They are repeated from the will lists which follow as a later chapter. Many of the backward references under non-East Anglian counties are for women who married Mortlocks, often Mortlocks living in Greater London. I suspect that several of these were country girls who came up to London to go into service, but mostly I have no evidence at that level of detail. A classic case of mobility is provided by the gamekeeper father and son, William and John, born respectively in Cambridgeshire of a father born in Eriswell, Suffolk, and Mildenhall. They and their spouses and children left vital records successively in Shropshire, Nottinghamshire, in the Highlands of Scotland, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, back in Nottinghamshire and then probably in Staffordshire and Yorkshire, and finally in Warwickshire. John was killed in action in France, fighting alongside Australians having been called up at age 33 with a wife and three children (see Lakenheath(5), Suffolk By the end of these pages it can be seen that the general diaspora of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, marvellously facilitated by improved physical and intellectual communications, is beginning to bite even on the Mortlocks. They have reached Northumberland, Cumbria and ultimately Cornwall, South Wales and Scotland; there are several separate branches in Canada, the United States, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand; there are Mortlock records in Jamaica and in the Argentine, and two Cambridge Mortlock ladies died in France. However it will also be noted that, while most of this emigration took place after, say, 1850, there are some interesting ventures abroad of much earlier date. One of the earliest, noted in the section One of Cromwells Captains, records a seventeenth century Mortlock emigrant to Jamaica. Although I have tried to list referrals for foreign countries, it should be noticed that nearly all the major Mortlock groups contributed emigrants to Australia and to the United States. Some events are recorded for countries overseas where no birth data is available, although the persons concerned were almost certanly English. This includes arrivals data at various ports. NB American records for MORELOCK refer to descendants of German MOHRLOCKs. Somehow true Mortlocks hang on to their dental consonant through thick and thin. However a possible example in England of a Mortlock starting off as MOHRLOCK is shown under Germany. The MEDLOCKs of Bedfordshire and Huntingdonshire may be related; this form seems to be local to those counties. However I have not extended this analysis in their direction. He is recorded as leaving Liverpool for Buenos Aires in 1907. He came home from South America to join up and was commissioned into 3 R.Lancs (Kings Own) as a 2nd Lt 6.5.1915. On 1st July 1916 he led his men over the top into the Battle of the Somme, between Serre and Beaumont Hamel. Almost immediately machine gun bullets tore into his legs. His right femur was broken and in August the leg was amputated. There was a further amputation in January 1917 so that an artificial limb could be fitted. In the same incident the left fibula was broken, and never healed, remaining septic for a long time; the two ends of the broken bone never united. Lionel was left in considerable pain for the rest of his short life. He had been so proud to wear his Kings uniform; by Lionels special request he was allowed to continue wearing it when retired, on appropriate occasions [PRO,WO339/63175]. ~ principal of Cheltenham Ladies College states that this family had Jewish origins, and owned a jewellery business in London [mortlock_5@hotmail.com] A female passenger from Southampton to Buenos Aires was recorded in 1911 Charles MORTLOCK b.1853 is listed as sailing from Southampton for Port Limon in Costa Rica in 1902 C MORTLOCK b.1871 (male) is listed as sailing from London for Demarara in British Guiana in 1891 H J 1916 London to Gibraltar UNASSIGNED ========== This section is for any Mortlocks whom the author cannot fit in anywhere else.
