In particular probate records often go back earlier than the associated parish records and so may carry a family story further back in time than might otherwise be possible. Sometimes, of course, what we get is a disconnected story, as tantalising and puzzling to analyse as Man Friday's solo footprint. In the case of the Mortlock family name, probate records and marriage licences show conclusively that the family was represented in London, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Essex in the sixteenth century; and per contra, it seems, nowhere else. The relative rarity of the Mortlock name makes it practicable to attempt a collation of Probate records for that surname, from published indexes and others in County Records Offices. The result is certainly capable of expansion; however what is offered may save other Mortlock descendants a few hours slaving over a hot fiche or film reader. Probate records have other advantages for the compiler of family trees, apart from their availability. They neatly filter out infants, so reducing the list of possibles to investigate. The downside is that many people do not leave estates requiring formal probate and so drop out of sight. Quite humble people DO feature; there is one worth only 3 in the lists. I have truncated the entries but have tried to show the location, sometimes the amount of estate, and sometimes relatives named in the Grant or otherwise identified. The index entries for the Probate Office grants are often sufficient in themselves to demonstrate relationships and territorial links - for instance between the china merchants of London and their Cambridgeshire roots. In some cases I have interpolated data from IGI or PRs or marriage licences, or from the Army List - several Mortlocks were commissioned in the First World War - and from the 1881 census, and some titbits that have come my way from other sources. One could perhaps have also gone through the Times indexes. The story begins with the PCC indexes, which in themselves mostly relate only to the more prestigious testators. As can be seen from the 1881 census, and as explained more fully elsewhere, the Mortlock name is highly concentrated in East Anglia and so I have extended the, essentially national or at least cross-county PCC entries with a section from published indexes of East Anglian wills from various ecclesiastical jurisdictions. No doubt wills of some untapped authorities, peculiars and so forth have escaped from this analysis. The National Probate Calendar is now commonly available in major public libraries in microfiche from 1858 (the inception of a national secular system of wills) down to 1943 or so, and takes up the tale from the ecclesiastical sources and brings it down to modern times. Some surprisingly modest estates occur alongside the relatively considerable wealth of the banking Mortlocks of Cambridge, their unrelated but near neighbours the china merchants, and the moderate wealth of several East Anglian farming dynasties. Perhaps the heirs of those that leave no real property did not need a formal probate before distributing personal effects and the money under the mattress; up to the end of the Second World War most people of all classes rented rather than owned the property that they lived in. But if one leaves a farm or public house then a formal process will be needed. The same goes for those that own a business. Note how many female testators died unmarried. Sometimes their apparent estate does not correctly measure their actual wealth during their lifetimes, because they had interest from Trusts which are invisible to the probate process. One can only conjecture whether, their financial wants supplied in this manner, the assistance of a man to spend their money was not required. The data also illustrate several instances of that upward mobility which has always been a feature of English society and which has saved us from revolution. For instance, William Mortlock, born into agriculture in Barton Mills in Suffolk, gets a job far away in Cumbria as coachman to the Vane family at Hutton Hall. Two of his sons qualify as medical practitioners; his grandson is sent to Public School and holds the King's Commission in the Army; coachman William's heirs are now gentlemen. We can see downward mobility too - a farmer whose brother is a labourer for instance. All surnames are MORTLOCK except where shown in capital letters. Relations and connections of John MORTLOCK III, banker of Cambridge, are asterisked. For post-1858 wills I have listed the grantee of probate where this person is also a Mortlock, or where I see some circumstantial reasons why the named person may be a relative, or a business partner. There seemed no point in listing solicitors. My thanks to whoever put together the Genealogical collection in Portsmouth Library, because that is where I found so much of the data which follows; and my thanks as well to those who compiled the indexes on which I have drawn - many of these editors did their work the hard way, without electronic word-processing. A special word of thanks to the Suffolk CRO which has microfilm of post-1858 wills for Suffolk people, which otherwise now cost 5 a throw. If only the other CROs did the same! Finally let me step aside from this statistical disquisition to remind the reader that each of these Mortlocks was a real person, and their passing a personal tragedy to those nearest to them. RJH Griffiths, Havant, 2004 Notations used in the tables which follow: => shows grantee of probate (professionals omitted) # PCC will * relative of John Mortlock III, banker of Cambridge % China Mortlocks PCC Wills & Admons 1383-1857 The PCC was used for proving wills covering property spread across more than one diocese. Haverhill is a special case because it lies on the border of three counties. Landholdings here would thus probably spread across more than one jurisdiction.
