Well over 150 joined up and too many paid the highest price of all for their service. Mortlocks served in France, the Balkans, Egypt, Aden, Kurdistan and India and doubtless elsewhere. A tiny few were decorated; a few were commissioned: but most came and went in the lowest rank of all, did their bit, hung their boots up and went back to obscurity. The very highest price was paid by Mary Ann Mortlock, of South Bank, Middlesborough, who lost three sons in ten months, her husband - his forebears probably from Mundford, Norfolk - also dying during this period. Other Mundford Mortlocks contributed three more members to the roll of fatalities. A pitiful coda for Suffolk is the repeated entries in the London Gazette for the unclaimed sixteen shillings and elevenpence which seems to be all Herbert left to the world. Although this is a small selection, mention might be made of the relatively higher ages of the casualties in the later stages of the war, reflecting the way ever-older men - therefore more likely to be married with children - were being called to the colours. * = Awarded 1914-15 Star. Almost all the other soldiers were awarded the War Medal and the Victory Medal - the latter was awarded posthumously to those who had been killed. The Theatre of War seems mostly only to have been noted when the 1914-15 Star was to be awarded. Some who served, but who were discharged early for medical or other reasons, are listed in WO364 but are not listed as having received any medals. Names in square brackets [] enlisted, but do not appear to have been awarded medals. Army & RAF Other Ranks Awarded World War 1 Campaign Medals, 1914-19 This list comprises all those Army and RAF ORs, not mentioned above, who are indexed in PRO as receiving some or all of the 1914-15 Star, the War Medal or the Victory Medal (irreverently known as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred after three animal cartoon characters of the day; the War Medal and the Victory Medal on their own were similarly known as Mutt and Jeff). The record is probably incomplete as doubtless many medals were never claimed; some had had a basinful of the Army and didnt want their gongs; some may have had nobody to put in a claim for them. Also, cards can go missing; millions of War Medals alone will have been issued. This is demonstrated by a few medal records that have been recovered from family sources but where no card was visible on the PRO microfiches (marked ). Where noted on the index card, the location of service abroad is given in italics. The rank for all is Private, or the equivalent lowest rank in the appropriate Corps - Gunner, Driver, Sapper, Trooper etc - unless otherwise noted. Regimental abbreviations are normal public usage. However there is a mention in the Regimental History of the Suffolk regiment of a Private Mortlock of their 1st Bns Sniper Section, who were lent out in pairs to the different companies for D-Day. Mortlock used skill and knowledge to good effect and was shortly thereafter lent to 4 Commando and then to 6th Airborne Brigade. Of the section it is written that casualties in killed inflicted on the enemy far exceeded their own losses - three of the Corporal-plus-seven in the original section. Kenneth Mortlock (see Cranham, Essex) served as a tail gunner in Bomber Command. There is a list of the 45 Australian Mortlocks who served in WW2 on the internet [www.ww2roll.gov.au] . An analysis of the various censuses produces a very rough cut, as shown in the following table. A name scores if it is used in conjunction with another, so that William James is in twice. The other main source of difficulty is the large number of Mortlocks known to be missing from each census. However, lets suppose that the name distribution for the missing is roughly the same as for those caught by the census taker. Here are some numbers: 1841 1851 1861 1871 1881 1891 1901 William 30 31 59 58 65 52 46 John 29 30 34 45 44 55 53 George 13 21 31 33 38 37 53 Charles 9 19 22 25 27 31 33 Henry/Harry 12 13 21 27 38 43 43 James 26 31 49 36 31 37 39 Thomas 18 24 22 22 23 20 18 Frederick 3 3 11 20 28 41 40 Samuel 6 3 12 21 13 17 12 ------------------------------------------------------ Total Mortlock. 459 560 707 823 930 1083 1148 (in England and Wales, men, women and children) Over time, clearly William eases and gives way to Henry/Harry, and Frederick. Analysing girls names is obviously a bit of a waste of time as almost none of the wives are born Mortlock. One thing that is noticeable in both cases is how conservative the selection is, particularly before the Mortlocks migrate outside East Anglia, and before late Vistorian pretensions begin to creep in (with not a few Alberts). Among boys it is particularly noticeable how perfectly ordinary names like Michael, Peter and Richard only occur in particular runs, and some names like David, Matthew, Nicholas and Timothy are hardly used at all. Apart from a few Banking Mortlocks, Edmund is hardly used at all in spite of him being a specifically East Anglian hero and saint, and Oliver is also very rare. Lewis, in Denham and Weeley, is a peculiarity all on its own. I forgot to count the Roberts and Josephs - sorry! but the numbers of both, latterly, are quite small. Finale So what became of 1881s thousand Mortlocks? A hundred and twenty years later I made a straw poll of the telephone books that cover their heartland. There were no Mortlocks recorded for Pampisford, Meldreth, Clare, Denham, Mildenhall, Lakenheath, Mundford, Hilgay, Hempstead or Peldon, nor in many other villages which had been Mortlock home territory for centuries. However, even leaving out of account ex-directories (and this straw poll was conducted before mobile phones swept the board, let alone internet telephony), the original 150 heads of families have held up pretty well in East Anglia in general; several of the original Mortlock villages such as Glemsford are still represented; and, besides, Mortlocks have gone forth to be listed all over the country and in many of the English-speaking countries abroad. The actual numbers noted from the phone books that cover the original Mortlock-land are as follows; I have noted those of their original villages, or locations to which Mortlocks had migrated by the end of the nineteenth century, that still have Mortlocks living in them or nearby: Cambridge area 15 (Cambridge, Soham, Great Shelford & Sawston(2)) Peterborough & Huntingdon 22 (Holywell, Needingworth & March(4)) NE Suffolk 3 (two in Southwold and one in Halesworth) W Suffolk 27 (Haverhill, Cavendish, Glemsford(2), Wickhambrook, Nowton, Hawstead(2), Great Welnetham, Bury(2), Exning, Gazeley, Worlington & Eriswell) Ipswich 5 Norfolk 26 (six in Norwich, others in Thrandeston & Gislingham) Colchester 5 (Toppesfield(2), St Osyth & Brightlingsea(2)) Chelmsford 9 (Maldon, Brentwood & Billericay(2)) Southend 8 (one in Pitsea!) Outer London/SW Essex 11 Bishops Stortford 4 (B.Stortford, Harlow, Thaxted) Outer London./S Herts/N Mx 6 do./W Mx 6 (Brentford, Pinner & Uxbridge(2)) Inner London 15 Outer London/NE Surrey 14 do./NW Kent 14 including a Mr Mortlocke Total 190 Perhaps it is to these people that I should really dedicate this work. For contnuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He has consistently performed good work when having to assume command of his platoon, and has at all times set a fine example.[LG,6.7.17] JK{uouic^{XR^{^{$( ((FWy{ -{wpwkw{w{wgkwakwa( Z)/LO'/GJbysokogokokokogoaok$?
